Frequently Asked Questions

frequently asked questions

General Questions

1. What content can I display on my monitors with Digital Signage OS?

Digital Signage OS allows you to showcase a variety of media on your screens, including videos, images, documents, online web pages, and apps. You can also combine these elements to create dynamic Playlists or Screen Layouts.

Feel free to upload any media files you want to use. We support YouTube videos, live streaming videos (from platforms like YouTube and Ustream, as well as custom streams), and PowerPoint files (which are converted to videos while preserving all animations). All common document types are supported and displayed as slides, including PDF, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel files. Our growing collection of apps, such as Scrolling Text (ticker), Rich Text, and RSS Feed, is also available for use.

2. What are the requirements for using Digital Signage OS?

To use Digital Signage OS, you’ll need Internet access and a Digital Signage OS-supported playback device.

Since Digital Signage OS is an online service, an Internet connection is essential for logging in and managing your monitors and content. Each monitor requires a dedicated Digital Signage OS-supported playback device, which can be either a Raspberry Pi you configure yourself or our preconfigured Digital Signage OS Player kit. Continuous Internet connectivity is also necessary for installed Digital Signage OS Players, whether through Wi-Fi, wired (LAN), or mobile (using a 3G/4G/LTE USB dongle).

3. Do I need special skills to use Digital Signage OS or install its player?

Absolutely not! Digital Signage OS was designed to be user-friendly for everyone.

You can forget about complicated technical jargon. The service is incredibly easy to use, and our Digital Signage OS Players are truly plug-and-play. In fact, you can even get them for free with our Annual Plan.

4. How many monitors does Digital Signage OS support per account?

You can connect as many monitors as your needs require.

Digital Signage OS utilizes scalable technologies capable of supporting tens of thousands of monitors under a single account. We offer mass management features for multiple displays, along with tag-based searches, making Digital Signage OS an easy solution for handling thousands of units efficiently.

5. Why shouldn't I just use my TV's built-in USB media player or a Smart TV?

Relying on a TV’s built-in USB media player or a Smart TV for digital signage will likely prove inefficient and complicate your operations.

Most TVs with a USB port only allow you to load media files onto a USB drive and play them back sequentially. That’s about it.

If the TV powers off, you’ll have to manually restart playback. Some TVs display distracting progress indicators, while others stop playback once the entire list of media is completed. While this might seem like a free option, it’s generally not suitable for businesses and organizations.

Digital Signage OS automates the playback process. It can turn the TV on and off, switch to the correct HDMI input, and ensure smooth operation without glitches, even after a power failure. Moreover, you can continuously update content over the Internet without needing USB sticks or DVD discs, and this applies whether you have 1 screen or 10,000. Digital Signage OS also includes a scheduling feature, allowing you to program your monitors to display different content at various times of the day, or even power off your monitor to conserve electricity.

And this doesn’t even cover how Digital Signage OS can create composite screens with multiple content types, including YouTube videos, PowerPoint presentations, live streaming videos, and more.

Features

1. What are the core concepts within Digital Signage OS?

Digital Signage OS is built around four simple concepts: Media, Playlists, Apps, and Screen Layouts.

  • Media refers to the content you create or upload to Digital Signage OS for display, such as image files, video files, documents, or websites.
  • Playlists are collections of media that play one after another, with durations you specify. This is how you create an image slideshow or a video playlist.
  • Apps are small, ready-to-use integrations that display helpful information like RSS feeds, scrolling tickers, rich text, or analog/digital clocks.
  • Screen Layouts are compositions of playlists, media, and apps arranged on a virtual monitor. For example, you could have a full-screen image slideshow with a video playing in one corner.

Once you’ve created your screen layouts, playlists, or uploaded your media files, you simply assign that content as the default for each of your monitors.

2. How do I control when content is displayed?

Beyond the default content assigned to each player, you can also set up a single Schedule.

The Schedule dictates the precise times that different screen layouts, playlists, or media files will be shown. For instance, you can set up a different playlist for specific hours or days, or schedule a particular screen layout to display during a given time frame. It’s an incredibly easy yet powerful feature.

Using a Schedule also allows you to set the hours you want to power off your monitors to reduce your electricity bill.

3. Does Digital Signage OS support vertically mounted monitors?

Yes, Digital Signage OS provides full support for monitors mounted vertically.

You can design multiple layouts for your screens, accommodating various resolutions, orientations, and aspect ratios. So, you could have a Screen Layout in two formats: one 16:9 horizontal and one 16:9 vertical. When you assign this Screen Layout for playback, each player will automatically select the appropriate format based on its aspect ratio and configured orientation.

4. What happens to my monitors during an Internet outage?

In the event of an Internet outage, your Digital Signage OS-enabled screens will continue to function normally for up to a full month.

Content displayed on your monitors is downloaded and played locally. However, you won’t be able to change what’s being displayed until Internet access is restored. Of course, content that loads directly from the Internet, such as live web pages and live streaming videos (simple YouTube videos are downloaded locally and will still work), will not be available when your devices are offline.

Advanced Features (tech)

Does Digital Signage OS support connecting through a Wi-Fi network?

How much bandwidth does Digital Signage OS use?

Digital Signage OS requires a substantial amount of bandwidth. Seriously.

Please ensure you use the Digital Signage OS service over a non-metered/unlimited Internet connection. The same applies to the Digital Signage OS players. Transferring large video files and constant communication between players and the service can significantly increase your Internet bill.

If you’re on a metered or limited Internet connection (e.g., a mobile carrier or per-traffic/per-hour access), please contact us to discuss whether our service is suitable for your connection.

How reliable is Digital Signage OS?

Digital Signage OS is highly reliable; very little can impact your screens.

Even in the unlikely event that our servers experience downtime, your monitors will continue to display their scheduled content for up to one month.

Please note, however, that Digital Signage OS is not a file storage service. You should always maintain backups of your content outside of Digital Signage OS. Always.

How secure is Digital Signage OS?

Digital Signage OS is very secure. We built it from the ground up with security as a top priority.

The Digital Signage OS service uses bank-grade security encryption, and the Digital Signage OS software is always firewalled, even within your own network. This ensures that no one can tamper with your monitors. You also have the flexibility to fully customize the provided security features.

What types of images does Digital Signage OS support?

Digital Signage OS can display any image type that a modern browser supports.

This includes JPEG, PNG, and GIF (including animations). Images are automatically resized for display, so no prior processing is necessary. However, it’s best to avoid using extremely high-resolution images, as they can slow down your Player. If your images have a resolution significantly higher than 1920×1080, consider resizing them before uploading to Digital Signage OS.

What types of videos does Digital Signage OS support?

Digital Signage OS supports a wide variety of video formats.

Videos you upload to Digital Signage OS are automatically converted to industry-standard formats (H.264 with AAC audio).

YouTube videos are supported out-of-the-box and are downloaded in the highest available quality (currently up to 1080p). Digital Signage OS also supports Live Streaming Videos (from YouTube, UStream, or custom HLS or RTMP/RTSP streams). These streams must be delivered in H.264 format to ensure playback on Digital Signage OS Players. We also support multicast LAN video streams.

Additionally, Digital Signage OS allows you to upload a PowerPoint file and have it converted to video on our servers, preserving all transitions and animations.

Finally, Digital Signage OS provides options to either “crop” content (to completely fill the region by cropping edges) or “fit” content (where black borders are added to compensate for aspect ratio differences).

What types of documents does Digital Signage OS support?

Digital Signage OS supports a wide variety of document formats.

We support PDF, PowerPoint (PPT/PPTX), Word (DOC/DOCX), and Excel (XLS/XLSX) files.

These documents are displayed as slideshows, showing one page at a time. You can set individual display durations for each page through the Digital Signage OS Portal.

Remember: Digital Signage OS already allows you to upload a PowerPoint file in the “Videos” section and have it converted to video on our servers, retaining all transitions and animations.

Does Digital Signage OS support video walls?

Yes, Digital Signage OS supports video walls.

We provide detailed instructions on creating a video wall using Digital Signage OS, typically involving one Digital Signage OS Player for each screen, plus one “master” Player. This allows for incredibly inexpensive video wall setups that can be matrix-like (e.g., 2×2, 3×3) or even asymmetric, with virtually any layout you can imagine.

Alternatively, you can use an HDMI video wall controller with a single Digital Signage OS player to drive a large video wall as one unified screen.

What size monitors does Digital Signage OS support?

Digital Signage OS software supports any resolution, meaning it’s compatible with any monitor size.

From 640×480 VGA monitors up to the latest 4K TVs, all monitors will work without issues. It’s generally best to choose a widescreen monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio (like “HD Ready,” “Full HD,” or “4K” monitors and TVs).

The Digital Signage OS Player (or the Raspberry Pi in general) should also work flawlessly with 99% of all monitors and TVs available, so there’s no need to worry much about compatibility.

How many items can be displayed on a single monitor simultaneously?

You can display any reasonable number of image slideshows, webpages, and apps concurrently.

However, if apps require significant processing power and your hardware isn’t sufficient, you might notice sluggish animations, depending on the type and content of the webpages and apps.

Please note that you can only display one video playlist at any given time. This is a hardware limitation of the Raspberry Pi, which cannot play back more than one video simultaneously. In most cases, this shouldn’t be an issue. We are planning to offer an advanced option to remove this restriction soon.

I have a huge collection of videos, more than 4GB, is this possible to use it?

Currently, no, not with the standard setup. However, you can upgrade your SD card.

The content you set to display should ideally use a maximum of 4GB of media. You can upgrade the SD card to a 32GB one, which allows for up to 24 hours of high-resolution video.

How does Digital Signage OS support powering monitors/TVs on and off?

We utilize the HDMI standard known as CEC (Consumer Electronics Control). Most TVs support this feature.

The Digital Signage OS Player (or Raspberry Pi in general) includes a CEC adapter on its HDMI monitor port. CEC is a standard communication protocol supported by most major TV manufacturers. It enables a playback device (in this case, the Digital Signage OS Player) to power on, power off, and switch video inputs on a CEC-enabled TV. You can check out a CEC compatibility chart to see if your TV is supported.

If your monitor does not support CEC (e.g., you’re using a computer monitor), the Digital Signage OS Player will turn off the HDMI port, allowing the monitor to power down automatically. This function is supported by all current monitors, including TVs.

In the future, we plan to provide support for using infrared LEDs to signal the monitor to turn on or off via IR. For larger installations, we can offer custom solutions, such as the above, or utilize custom serial connections to monitors.

Is there a storage limit for media uploaded to Digital Signage OS?

No, there is no storage limit whatsoever. You can upload as many videos and images as you wish.

How about support?

Simply log in to your account and send us a message. We’ll help you out as soon as possible. Of course, paid users receive priority over free users, but we typically provide a first response within 10 hours for all requests.

Players and Monitors

What hardware does Digital Signage OS support for playback?

Digital Signage OS primarily supports the Raspberry Pi and our own Digital Signage OS Player (which is also based on the Raspberry Pi).

The Raspberry Pi is a very affordable yet capable mini-computer that you can purchase from vendors globally. We previously supported regular PCs, but that support has been discontinued as it was rarely used.

Our proprietary Digital Signage OS Player is built on the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. Depending on the annual pricing plan you select, you’ll receive either a 1GB or 4GB Raspberry Pi 4 Player. For instance, the Basic Pricing plan includes a free 1GB Raspberry Pi 4 Player, while the Premium or Enterprise plans provide a free 4GB Raspberry Pi 4 Player. The Digital Signage OS Players we ship are pre-configured and ready to use upon arrival. You can find more details in the Digital Signage OS Player section below.

Which Raspberry Pi models does Digital Signage OS support?

Digital Signage OS was initially developed for the Raspberry Pi 3 and has since been optimized to run perfectly on the Raspberry Pi 4. It also performs well on the Pi 2. Even a Pi 1 or Pi Zero (and Pi Zero W) will work for simpler applications.

The user experience has been particularly optimized for the Raspberry Pi 4, and our own Digital Signage OS Players are based on the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. We now exclusively ship the newest Raspberry Pi 4 Model B.

Digital Signage OS has been tested and confirmed to work on:

  • (August 2019) Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (4 cores, 1GB/2GB/4GB RAM) – Offers the best possible experience for both 1080p and 4K content.
  • Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and B+ (4 cores, 1GB RAM) – Provides an excellent 1080p experience.
  • Raspberry Pi 2 Model B (4 cores, 1GB RAM) – Delivers a great overall experience.

  • Raspberry Pi Zero (1 core, 512MB RAM) – Significantly slower, can handle most cases but changes take longer. Requires an Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter.
  • Raspberry Pi Zero W (1 core, 512MB RAM) – Significantly slower, can handle most cases but changes take longer. Includes a built-in Wi-Fi adapter. Supported using a special image.
  • Raspberry Pi Model B (1 core, 256MB RAM) – Dramatically slower; can only handle a single playlist and may wear out the SD card due to swapping under heavy load.
  • NEC Vxx4 and Pxx5 series displays, with Raspberry Pi 3 Compute Module – NEC Edition.

We also support all Raspberry Pi Compute Modules corresponding to the generations listed above. However, we do not recommend Raspberry Pi models with less than 1GB RAM for new production-grade installations. For more detailed Digital Signage OS compatibility information across different Raspberry Pi versions, please see our dedicated compatibility section.

What TVs or professional displays does Digital Signage OS support?

Digital Signage OS software supports any type of monitor or TV, regardless of its resolution.

The service was primarily designed with a main resolution of 1920×1080 (commonly known as “Full HD” or “1080p” in the TV industry). With the Raspberry Pi 4, Digital Signage OS now also supports 4K resolution. Content is automatically adjusted to fit any resolution and any monitor or TV, even non-widescreen displays.

Digital Signage OS supports multiple aspect ratios and orientations, allowing you to customize and optimize your content by both ratio and orientation (portrait or landscape). For specific resolutions supported by our Digital Signage OS Player, please refer to the hardware specifications of the Digital Signage OS Player.

Digital Signage OS Player

What is the Digital Signage OS Player?

The Digital Signage OS Player is our own user-friendly, plug-and-play device, built around the popular Raspberry Pi 4 B mini-computer.

Digital Signage OS requires a device to manage and display your media on your monitor or TV. To simplify this for you, we developed our own consumer-friendly device.

With the Digital Signage OS Player, you receive:

  • A Raspberry Pi 4 (Model B) mini-computer (you can choose between the 1GB or 4GB version), complete with a metallic case that acts as a heatsink to keep it cool, and a main power supply.
  • A 3-foot (1-meter) Micro HDMI to Standard HDMI cable for connecting the player to your TV or monitor.
  • A 16GB SD card, preloaded with Digital Signage OS software and preconfigured for immediate plug-and-play use.

Does this sound complicated? It isn’t at all! As soon as you plug your Player into your monitor or TV and connect it to your broadband router, it will immediately begin displaying content from your account.

How do I order the Digital Signage OS Player?

To order a Digital Signage OS Player, simply sign in to the Digital Signage OS service and select “Get Digital Signage OS Player” from the top-right menu.

Every Digital Signage OS Player you order comes pre-configured with your account details, so you can just plug it in and start displaying your content!

Remember: Our Annual Plan includes a free Raspberry Pi 4 Digital Signage OS Player! Depending on the pricing plan you choose, you’ll receive either a 1GB Raspberry Pi 4 Digital Signage OS Player or a 4GB Raspberry Pi 4 Digital Signage OS Player.

If you require any advanced configuration, you can provide it during the ordering process. For example, you can supply your Wi-Fi network name and password, and your Digital Signage OS Player will arrive ready to connect to your Wi-Fi network!

Does Digital Signage OS ship internationally?

Yes! Digital Signage OS ships worldwide. Our Digital Signage OS Players are dispatched from our warehouses in the US or the EU, depending on your location, to ensure you receive them as quickly as possible.

What if the Digital Signage OS Player malfunctions?

The Digital Signage OS Player comes with a limited worldwide warranty of 1 year.

However, we recommend that you first follow our Digital Signage OS Player troubleshooting guide. This could save you valuable time and money.

If your Digital Signage OS Player is eligible for replacement, you can ship the faulty unit back to us, and we will send you a replacement within 2-3 days of receiving it. You will cover the shipping costs for returning the faulty Player, while we will cover the shipping costs for the replacement unit.

To avoid unnecessary shipping costs, please make sure to go through the troubleshooting guide thoroughly. You might find that a local part replacement is a more cost-effective solution than sending the unit back to us.

Do I need a Digital Signage OS Player to use Digital Signage OS?

No, you don’t. But why wouldn’t you?

You always have the option to purchase a Raspberry Pi yourself, along with a case, power adapter, HDMI cable, and an SD card. Then, you’d download our Raspberry Pi image, write it to the SD card, and assemble everything. But why go through all that hassle?

The Digital Signage OS Player is likely cheaper than putting together a Raspberry Pi player yourself. Plus, with our Annual Plan, we provide you with all the 1GB Raspberry Pi 4 Players you need for FREE!

Pricing

Is Digital Signage OS free?

Digital Signage OS is completely free if you are only using one screen.

If you plan to utilize more than one screen, you will need to purchase a paid Digital Signage OS subscription for all of your screens.

Remember: With our Annual Plan, we provide all the Digital Signage OS Players you require for free. Simply proceed to upgrade your plan.

Will I be charged for using Digital Signage OS in the Free Plan?

No, you will not be charged.

As you likely noticed during sign-up, you were not asked for any billing details. Therefore, we will not charge you unless you explicitly provide us with your billing information when you purchase a subscription plan.

Are there alternative payment methods besides a credit card?

For Annual subscriptions, we also accept wire transfers.

We can issue you an invoice that you can then pay via a wire transfer to our US bank account. Please inform us if you require this arrangement.

Unfortunately, we do not currently support PayPal.

What is a registered monitor?

A registered monitor is a display that is actively in use with Digital Signage OS.

Each monitor within your Digital Signage OS account can either be “registered” or “unregistered.”

  • Registered monitors are those that have been successfully paired with a Digital Signage OS Player.
  • Unregistered monitors in your account do not have a physical counterpart yet and are awaiting a player (such as a Digital Signage OS Player) to connect and register them.

Both registered and unregistered monitors can be managed identically within your Digital Signage OS account; you can configure settings, upload content, assign schedules, and so on. However, unregistered monitors cannot actually display content until they are registered by a player (such as a Digital Signage OS Player).

How much does Digital Signage OS cost?

Digital Signage OS pricing is determined by the maximum number of monitors you can have active under your account.

You have the flexibility to set this limit, ranging from 2 to 100 monitors. Digital Signage OS will automatically suggest the most suitable plan for you, which is billed monthly.

For installations requiring more than 100 monitors, please contact our sales team for a custom quote tailored to your specific needs. We are capable of supporting thousands of monitors seamlessly!

Remember: A single-screen account is always free!

Can I choose an annual plan for Digital Signage OS?

Yes, you can! Simply select the Annual Plan, and we will provide the Digital Signage OS Players you need for free!

How can I test-drive Digital Signage OS without purchasing a Digital Signage OS Player or Raspberry Pi?

You can create a free account, but you will need a Player to see your content working on a screen.

First and foremost, Digital Signage OS is free to use for a single screen. We recommend purchasing a single Digital Signage OS Player to experience the real system. If it doesn’t meet your expectations, you can easily convert the Digital Signage OS Player into a full-featured Media Center with RaspBMC for free!

If you prefer a “no-cost” approach, you can request a demo from our Support Team. This demo can include a video capture of the output you create, allowing you to verify that it meets your requirements.

Are there any limits placed on Digital Signage OS usage?

No, there are no limits whatsoever on usage.

You can upload as much content as you desire and make as many changes as you need. The only restriction is the number of registered monitors. As long as your subscription covers the number of registered monitors you wish to operate, everything else is unlimited!

Do I have to pay extra for support?

No, online support service is included in your Plan.

In fact, even accounts on the Free Plan receive complimentary support. However, we prioritize responding to requests from paid accounts before addressing those from free accounts.

If you have a large project that requires on-site presence or deployment services, please contact us. We have a Partner Network that may be able to accommodate your specific requirements.

What happens if I want to add more screens/displays/monitors?

You can add as many monitors as you need, and they will become usable as soon as they are connected.

New monitors will initially appear as “unregistered” in your account until the player connects for the first time and successfully registers. You can manage unregistered monitors just like registered ones; they simply haven’t been paired with a physical player yet.

Your subscription includes a limit on the number of registered monitors. If you have reached this limit, you won’t be able to register any new monitors. Should you wish to increase this limit, simply update your subscription to reflect the new number of monitors you intend to operate.

What happens if I want to reduce my active monitors?

You will need to delete the registered monitors that you no longer require from your account.

Players associated with deleted monitors will be de-registered, and those monitors will continuously display a relevant message, indicating they are awaiting registration.

Our charging system is fully automated, so you will be billed (or credited) the difference on your plan. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about losing service credit.

What happens if a charge for my subscription fails?

Automated emails will be sent to you, and if no action is taken, your players will eventually stop playback.

We aim to ensure that failed charges do not disrupt your digital signage deployment. Since monitors are often in public spaces, we want to handle these situations carefully and discreetly.

If a charge fails, an automated email will be sent to your designated email address, notifying you of the issue and urging you to take action. We will continue sending these emails daily.

If the charge cannot be completed within 5 days, we will automatically display a flashing red image (without any text) for 2 minutes every 2 hours on your screens to alert you of the problem.

If the charge cannot be completed within 2 weeks, your account will be automatically downgraded to a free account. All registered monitors will be de-registered, and only one monitor (the first one you created) will remain registered.

You can prevent this at any time by logging in and updating your billing details.

What will happen if I cancel my subscription?

First and foremost, we hope to assist you in resolving any issues you may be experiencing.

To cancel your subscription, you can navigate to the subscription panel and set the number of monitors to 1, effectively deleting all other monitors from your Digital Signage OS account. If you wish for us to completely remove your account and all associated media, please email us, and we will process that request.
